Looking for a good underwater substrate for amphibians. ?

I'm off shopping tomorrow for the fire belly newt family and I'm looking for some suggestions of safe and good quality underwater substrates. I've done the pebble thing and I would like something else. Something soft for their little bodies, won't mess up the water too much, and will allow us to see their dark bodies easily.
